METHODOLOGY
The emphasis of the instruction is on functional communication-speaking, listening and understanding..
A direct methodology that focuses on dialogue, role-play techniques and questions and answers. Grammar is introduced at this level in the context of teaching a specific communicative skill.
To the extent possible, classes are conducted in the Spanish language. Students are taught basic classroom vocabulary and instructions This creates a Spanish-speaking environment and in itself teaches the number of essential words and phrases.
GOALS
- Provide a variety of instructional approaches to regularly renew students’ interest and attention.
- Progress toward acquiring functional oral Spanish skills (speaking, listening and comprehension).
- Introduce reading and written in Spanish,as appropriate to grade level.
- Develop an appreciation of Hispanic culture.
- Incorporate Catholic traditions and prayers into Spanish instruction whenever possible in keeping with the religious mission of the school.

* Extra credit is also given for active participation in class, which is particularly important for language learning
Third and fourth graders have homework once a week. They have one week to finish the assignment. They also have special projects, individual group and class project. This will help them be prepared for the next level. Examples are projects about Hispanic Heritage Month, Spanish speaking countries, also interviews with Spanish speaking people, self portraits and family trees.
Each student has a dictionary, Spanish notebook and folder. In fourth grade a workbook (Asi Escribimos) with supplementary writing and reading activities..
