Spanish Program

Welcome and Welcome back!!!

I am very happy to continue doing this wonderful job… Teaching my language!!!
In the last year, we had learned mucho Español, and we are going to keep up the hard work. For new parents and students, let me tell you what I always say. ”If I am talking English, you can talk Spanish”. Learning is based on effort and attitude. To gain a full perspective on learning another language, in this case Español, also involves a deeper understanding of Spanish speaking societies and their culture. I know that everyone will enjoy it.

Goal
The goal of the Spanish Program is to educate students in the language and culture to make them more knowledgeable and active members of a global society. Students will learn to use meaningful Spanish communication in both spoken and written form. The Spanish Program emphasizes language as it is used in real life situations that students are most likely to encounter. Through foreign language study, students develop sensitivity to the cultural and linguistic heritage of other groups, understand their influence on American culture, and become prepared to participate in a society characterized by linguistic and cultural diversity.

Enduring Understandings

• As the world moves towards a global community, it is increasingly important to be able to communicate in languages other than English.
• It is important to understand the cultural perspectives that generate patterns of behavior, ways of life, worldviews, and contributions.
• Proficiency in a foreign language is a vehicle to gaining knowledge that can only be acquired through that language and its culture.
• The study of a foreign language enables students to develop insights into the nature of language and culture.
• Learning a foreign language enables an individual to participate in multilingual communities.

Spanish Language

The study of Spanish involves learning vocabulary and structures in the context of the meaning one wishes to convey. It also involves nonverbal communication, knowledge of status and discourse style, and at times, the learning of a little change alphabet.
Communication strategies must be taught to enable students to engage and to derive meaning from context. Direct instruction in language learning strategies should be a part of the experience.
